KRISTY & STEVE DO SYDNEY!

Last weekend, on our way back from Wagga Wagga, Steve and I were lucky enough to spend the weekend in Sydney.  We had a few great dinners, lots of great drinks, explored the city, and took in all the local sights.  It was amazing to see the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in real life when I've only ever seen them in pictures or on TV.  It was truly a great experience.

DAY ONE - FRIDAY

We arrived in Sydney around 7pm on Friday night and easily found our hostel.  Our hostel was in the Kings Cross area, which has a very active night life.  We checked in and went for dinner at a cool restaurant called the Sugar Mill.  I was VERY pleased that a pint of beer in Sydney only cost about $7 (as opposed to $12+ in Perth!) - finally a reasonably priced drink!  People were actually dressed up for Halloween night out, which is not normally celebrated here in Australia.

DAY TWO - SATURDAY

We got up early and went to a small cafe for breakfast.  Again, here I was pleasantly surprised by the semi-reasonable price of a cup of coffee ($3 vs. $5 in Perth!).  Then we ventured throughout the city to finally arrive at the Opera House.  I was thrilled at seeing it for the first time!  It's very surreal!

Me at the cafe we had breakfast at.

Steve, as we wandered through the city towards the harbour.

Me, with the Sydney Tower in the background.

I tried to climb into this tree for a cute picture, but ended up falling and scraping my legs!

The first sighting of the Sydney Opera House.

The first sighting of the Harbour Bridge.

Steve and I decided to take a tour of inside the Opera House so that we could see what the actual rooms looked like.  We weren't allowed to take any pictures inside any of the actual theatres but there was plenty of opportunity for photography in the lobbies and elsewhere.

After the tour of the Opera House we took a ferry to Manly and spent some time on Manly beach.  It was fairly warm, a little bit of a cool wind but I was still able to be in my bathing suit on the beach (I've gotten into the habit of comparing the weather here to the weather in Toronto quite frequently.  So even when it is a little chilly here, ex. 22C, I still feel warm since it is -2C back home)!

We spent the rest of the night at The Rocks, which is now an area of restaurants and pubs but was once considered a slum where the convicts and sailors would convene.  We got some delicious pizza and a few drinks and just enjoyed the area.

DAY THREE

We woke up early on Sunday to make sure we could get everything packed into the short day that we wanted to.  We started with breakfast back in The Rocks, at Pancakes on The Rocks -- amazing and decadent pancakes/crepes that was recommended to us by someone at work.

There is a local outdoor market that is set up every Sunday in The Rocks which we explored.  Steve got himself a charicature which was really fun!

After the market we took the train to Bondi and walked a few km to Bondi beach, the famous beach where surfing is apparently great!  It was a bit chilly that day, so no tanning on the beach, but still warm enough to lay out on the grass and get a few great pictures.

After the beach, we headed to the airport which is where we realized we missed our flight!!  I explained this in my previous post so I won't go into much detail but it definitely added to the adventure of a weekend that we experienced in Sydney.

I was really glad to have the weekend in Sydney with such a great travel buddy.  Seeing all of the famous tourist sights was great, and taking in the local culture at The Rocks was definitely a unique experience.  I know that most of the Aussies would recommend other cities over Sydney, but as a tourist I thought it was amazing!  Tons of pictures, tons of fun, and tons of memories!

I miss you all terribly!
